This beautiful and functional suribachi is a Japanese mortar and pestle. For those of you who have tried a marble or porcelain mortar and pestle and been frustrated by the spices that pop out and fly across the room, you've found a solution here!The clever design of this mortar includes ridges inside the bowl, so that the spices are anchored so you can pound them into the desired consistency with the wooden pestle. The bowl's exterior is a gorgeous mink brown color and the interior a clear, unglazed white (not the blue of the picture). The 6" diameter of the bowl gives you room enough to grind spices for one meal or for 10.
